Position Summary
Registered Nurse care for people who are sick, injured, convalescent, or disabled. Under general supervision are responsible for delivering of safe patient care utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The Registered Nurse also directs and guides patient/family teaching and activities of other nursing personnel while maintaining standards of professional nursing. Collaborate with other professional disciplines to ensure effective patient care delivery and achievement of desired patient outcomes. The nature of the direction and supervision required for this position varies by State and job setting.
Med-Surge Nurses provide care for primarily adult patients before and after surgical procedures; they also attend to those who are being treated with pharmaceuticals to manage an illness. Due to the broad range of medical conditions they will encounter, they must be well-versed in a large variety of health conditions.
Position ResponsibilitiesMed-Surge Nurses provide direct and individualized nursing care to patients based on the application of scientific nursing principles. In addition to general nursing care duties include but are not limited to:
Other Responsibilities: Complete required orientation. Follow facility and OSHA safety rules and procedures. Follow facility unusual occurrence protocol. Respect cultural and religious practices of patients. Uphold HIPPA regulations. Punctual and dependent for confirmed shifts.
Depending on the setting, may also: Direct care provided by LPN’s or CNA’s. Float among various clinical services, where qualified and competent.
Qualifications
Graduate of an Accredited Nursing Program
The Med-Surge RN provides direct nursing care in accordance with established policies, procedures, and protocols of the healthcare organization. Because patients need round the clock care, working hours include days, nights, weekends, and holidays. The number of patients assigned per shift will vary with facility and specialty. Nurses will need to spend a considerable time walking, bending, stretching, and standing, assisting with patient transfers. Nurses must use proper body mechanics and procedure for lifting/moving patients while assisting CNA’s. Nurses may face hazards from exposure to chemicals and infectious diseases. Additionally, may treat patients that may be confused, irrational, agitate and /or uncooperative.
