Position Summary

Registered Nurse care for people who are sick, injured, convalescent, or disabled. Under general supervision are responsible for the delivery of safe patient care utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The Registered Nurse also directs and guides patient/family teaching and activities of other nursing personnel while maintaining standards of professional nursing. Collaborate with other professional disciplines to ensure effective patient care delivery and achievement of desired patient outcomes. The nature of the direction and supervision required for this position varies by State and job setting.

Telemetry Nurses provide care to patients by connecting patients to machines that measure heart rate, blood pressure, breathing rate, as well as blood-oxygen levels and electrocardiogram information. These machines then send data to computer screens for nurses to monitor. Telemetry Nurses read and, interpret the data to better determine patient care.

Position Responsibilities

Telemetry Nurses provide direct and individualized nursing care to patients based on the application of scientific nursing principles. In addition to general nursing care duties include but are not limited to:

  • Access, plan and evaluate patient care plans while coordinating with all healthcare team members
  • Prepares and Administers (orally, subcutaneously, through IV) and records prescribed medications
  • Reports adverse reactions to medications or treatments in accordance with policy
  • Provides basic bedside care
  • Identifies irregular telemetry reading and notifies appropriate medical team members
  • Initiates corrective action whenever information from monitor equipment show adverse symptomatology
  • Respond to life-saving situations using nursing standards and protocol
  • Record all care information concisely, accurately, and completely in a timely manner in the appropriate format of the facility
  • Initiate patient education plan, as prescribed by physician. Teaches patients and significant other how to manage their illness/ injury by explaining: post-treatment home care needs, diet/nutrition/ exercise programs, self-administration of medication, and rehabilitation

Other Responsibilities: Completes required orientation. Follows facility and OSHA safety rules and procedures. Follows facility unusual occurrence protocol. Respects cultural and religious practices of patients. Upholds HIPPA regulations. Punctual and dependent for confirmed shifts.

Depending on the setting, may also: Direct care provided by LPN’s or CNA’s. Float among various clinical services, where qualified and competent.

Qualifications

Graduate of an Accredited Nursing Program

  • Current and valid State RN License
  • Current BLS and ACLS (AHA)
  • Minimum of (1) year Telemetry experience
  • Cognitive skills related to the position
Working Conditions

The Telemetry RN provides direct nursing care in accordance with established policies, procedures, and protocols of the healthcare organization. Because patients need round the clock care, working hours include days, nights, weekends, and holidays. The number of patients assigned per shift will vary with facility and specialty. Nurses will need to spend a considerable time walking, bending, stretching, and standing, assisting with patient transfers. Nurses must use proper body mechanics and procedure for lifting/moving patients while assisting CNA’s. Nurses may face hazards from exposure to chemicals and infectious diseases. Additionally, may treat patients that may be confused, irrational, agitate and /or uncooperative.

Physical Demands
  • Ability to lift twenty (20) pounds. Moving, lifting or transferring of patients may involve lifting up to fifty (50) pounds as well as assist with weights of more than one hundred (100) pounds
  • Ability to stand for extended periods
  • Fine motor skills
