Position Summary

Registered Nurse care for people who are sick, injured, convalescent, or disabled. Under general supervision are responsible for the delivery of safe patient care utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The Registered Nurse also directs and guides patient/family teaching and activities of other nursing personnel while maintaining standards of professional nursing. Collaborate with other professional disciplines to ensure effective patient care delivery and achievement of desired patient outcomes. The nature of the direction and supervision required for this position varies by State and job setting.

 

Operating Room Nurses provide direct and individualized care to patients before, during, and after surgical procedures. They also assist the surgeon and the surgical team in their tasks.

Position Responsibilities

Operating Room Nurses provide direct and individualized nursing care to patients based on the application of scientific nursing principles. In addition to general nursing care duties include but are not limited to:

  • Consult and coordinates with healthcare team members to assess, plan and evaluate patient care plans
  • Conducts pre- and post-operative education, as well as serve as a liaison to family and members of the operating team
  • Takes and monitors patients’ vital signs
  • Ensures that operating on the correct patient and the correct procedure is being performed.
  • Provides basic bedside care
  • Prepares and Administers (orally, subcutaneously, through IV) and records prescribed medications
  • Reports adverse reactions to medications or treatments in accordance with policy
  • Respond to life-saving situations using nursing standards and protocol
  • Record all care information concisely, accurately, and completely in a timely manner in the appropriate format of the facility
  • Preps operating room for patient/procedure
  • Monitors patient’s physical and emotional wellbeing throughout the care continuum
  • Initiates patient education plan, as prescribed by physician, as well as teaches patients and significant others how to manage their post-treatment home care needs, self-administration of medication, and rehabilitation
During the surgical procedure, OR Nurses can take the role of:

Circulating Nurse, with the following additional duties:

  • Assist in positioning, responding to comfort/safety
  • Provide accurate care and handling of specimens
  • Observes, checks, and monitors all equipment used during the surgery to confirm everything is running smoothly
  • Handles patient’s documentation
  • Inventories all items, both pre- and post-surgery Scrub Nurse, with the following additional duties:
  • Selects and handles instruments and supplies used, passing them to the surgeon
  • Inventories all items, both pre- and post-surgery

 

Nurses First Assist, with the following additional duties:

  • Delivers direct surgical care by assisting physicians
  • Helps control bleeding
  • Provides wound exposure
  • Sutures patients after surgery
  • Other Responsibilities: Complete required orientation. Follow facility and OSHA safety rules and procedures. Follow facility unusual occurrence protocol. Respect cultural and religious practices of patients. Uphold HIPPA regulations. Punctual and dependent for confirmed shifts.

    Depending on the setting, may also: Direct care provided by LPN’s or CNA’s. Float among various clinical services, where qualified and competent.

    Qualifications

    Graduate of an Accredited Nursing Program

  • Current and valid State RN License
  • Current BLS and ACLS (AHA)
  • Minimum of (1) year Operating Room experience
  • Cognitive skills related to the position
  • Working Conditions

    The Med-Surge RN provides direct nursing care in accordance with established policies, procedures, and protocols of the healthcare organization. Because patients need round the clock care, working hours include days, nights, weekends, and holidays. The number of patients assigned per shift will vary with facility and specialty. Nurses will need to spend a considerable time walking, bending, stretching, and standing, assisting with patient transfers. Nurses must use proper body mechanics and procedure for lifting/moving patients while assisting CNA’s. Nurses may face hazards from exposure to chemicals and infectious diseases. Additionally, may treat patients that may be confused, irrational, agitate and /or uncooperative.

    Physical Demands
  • Ability to lift twenty (20) pounds. Moving, lifting, or transferring of patients may involve lifting up to fifty (50) pounds as well as assist with weights of more than one hundred (100) pounds

  • Visual acuity
